IT slang emerged as a natural byproduct of communication and collaboration among developers, engineers, and other tech professionals. It allows people in the industry to exchange ideas two or even three times faster, without losing meaning. These expressions often convey a thought more precisely than the equivalent in everyday language (and some are simply impossible to translate directly into Ukrainian). For instance, the Team Lead has a perfectly valid translation “лідер команди”. Yet in global companies, the English term dominates because it’s recognizable to everyone, regardless of where they live or work.
Here are some common IT slang terms and what they really mean:
Bug — an error in the code (помилка в коді чи програмі);
Lag — delay in response time (затримка в роботі системи);
Deploy — releasing a new version of an app or site (впроваджувати нову версію);
Crash — when a program or system stops working suddenly (раптове припинення роботи програми);
Patch — an update to fix bugs or vulnerabilities (програма чи її частина, яка виправляє помилки в ПЗ і встановлюється поверх оригінального коду);
Refactor — improving code without changing its function (переписування коду для покращення);
Ping — sending a quick request to check connection (перевірити зв’язок або зв’язатися з кимось);
Outsource — delegating certain business operations to an external company or freelancers (передача частини діяльності іншій компанії чи фахівцям поза штатом);
Soft skills — social, communication and personal skills that help in teamwork and collaboration (соціальні та комунікативні навички);
Hard skills — technical knowledge and abilities required for specific tasks (технічні знання і навички);
Feature — a special or unique functionality of a product (особливість);
Production — the final, live version of software available to end users (кінцева версія);
Front-end — the part of a website or application that users see and interact with (клієнтська частина сайту чи програми);
Back-end — the server-side logic, databases, and processes that power an application (серверна частина сайту чи програми);
Backlog — a list of tasks required to support a larger strategic plan (список завдань у межах проєкту).
